Substance Use Detox & Addiction Treatment Services

The first treatment commonly used for drug and alcohol addiction involves a clinically supervised process known as medical detox. Individuals with dependencies on drugs or alcohol usually experience a variety of unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when they attempt to quit or cut back on their use. Depending on the substances involved and other factors, these effects can range from mild to life-threatening.

Following detox, treatment consists of several evidence-based methodologies, such as individual, group, and family therapies. These are often combined with relapse prevention techniques, life skills training, holistic healing strategies, recreational activities, and aftercare planning. The overarching goal of treatment is to provide individuals with a comprehensive, individualized approach designed to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of addiction.

Disorders & Addictions We Treat at Our Maine Treatment Facility

At Pine Tree Recovery Center, our evidence-based detox programs are designed to ensure patients are safe and as comfortable as possible during withdrawal. Our treatment programs are tailored to meet each client’s unique needs, and the strategies used during detox vary accordingly. Substances addressed during medical detox include alcohol, opioids, stimulants, and other prescription and illicit drugs with the potential for misuse and dependence.

Prescription Drug Detox

There are a wide variety of prescription drugs with the potential for misuse and addiction. Treatment for individuals who’ve developed a dependence on prescription drugs is based on protocols specific to the type of substance. For example, an oxycodone-related detox may be addressed using medication-assisted treatment (MAT) that includes FDA-approved medications, such as buprenorphine and methadone.

Other common habit-forming medications include stimulants used for ADHD (Adderall, Concerta) and anti-anxiety drugs (benzodiazepines).

Alcohol Detox

Alcohol dependence is a severe condition that requires professional oversight in a clinical setting. Alcohol withdrawal can result in severe and potentially lethal effects, including delirium tremens—a condition marked by agitation, confusion, tremors, hallucinations, and seizures. To avoid this, medical providers can administer certain benzodiazepines (Librium, diazepam) to patients to prevent life-threatening symptoms.

Opioid Detox

Opioids are a class of substances that includes both prescription medications and illicit drugs. Although withdrawal from opioids is not typically associated with fatalities, it can be severe and a powerful impetus for relapse.

Like oxycodone, dependencies on other opioids, such as morphine, heroin, and fentanyl analogs, can often be effectively treated using FDA-approved MAT. Following detox, naltrexone can also be used to help reduce cravings and the desire to use.

Stimulant Detox

Stimulant withdrawal, although not typically life-threatening, can be highly unpleasant and may be more likely to result in relapse if undergone outside of clinical care. Symptoms may include depression, extreme fatigue, mood swings, and excessive sleepiness.

Beyond ADHD medications, stimulants also include illicit drugs such as cocaine and meth. Medically supervised stimulant withdrawal may include medications to ease symptoms.

Benzodiazepine Detox

Like alcohol, benzodiazepine withdrawal can result in severe symptoms and a life-threatening condition similar to that of delirium tremens that include rebound depression and anxiety, insomnia, hallucinations, and seizures. Treatments used in detox may consist of a tapering schedule, beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, or longer-acting benzodiazepines.

Synthetic Drug Detox

Synthetic drugs (sometimes referred to as designer drugs) are a varied group of manufactured substances that have a wide array of effects. Many of these are created specifically to mimic the effects of other drugs while advantageously circumventing drug laws. Treatments administered during detox depend on the substance(s) involved and individual factors.

Common Synthetic Drugs Include:

  • Stimulants — phentermine, ephedrine, cathinone
  • Cannabinoids — K2, Spice
  • Dissociative Anesthetics — PCP, ketamine, MK-801
  • Empathogens — MDMA (Ecstasy/Molly)
  • Psychedelics — LSD, DMT

This list is not all-inclusive. There are many substances not mentioned here that can be habit-forming, making medical supervision prudent for individuals undergoing withdrawal.

Our Intensive Outpatient Program for Substance Use Recovery

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a flexible form of addiction treatment that allows individuals to live at home while participating in treatment. Individuals attend treatment four days a week (Monday–Thursday) for three hours per day. We have morning, afternoon, and evening tracks to accommodate different schedules. The program features a wide range of therapeutic strategies and holistic treatment methods designed to address addiction from multiple angles.

Our IOP programs offer a high level of care suitable for many individuals and have certain advantages over other treatment formats. These individuals include those who need a flexible schedule to attend to work, school, family, or other responsibilities, as well as those who would benefit from a higher level of care than traditional outpatient treatment offers.

Substance Use Treatment Therapies

Our programs include several evidence-based treatments commonly used to address both substance use and mental health disorders (1).

These Include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — A form of psychotherapy that focuses on modifying maladaptive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors by identifying and uprooting negative or irrational beliefs.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) — A modified version of CBT that emphasizes staying grounded in the present moment and helps individuals learn to work through their emotions while improving their personal relationships.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) A collaborative, evidence-based counseling approach that helps individuals find the motivation to alter their unhealthy behaviors and make meaningful life changes.
  • Relapse Prevention Training — A strategy that individuals can use to help identify their personal relapse triggers and manage them using a combination of therapeutic techniques.
  • Individual Therapy — One-on-one behavioral therapy sessions with a therapist that help them develop the coping mechanisms they need to deal with stress and maintain sobriety.
  • Group Therapy — Therapeutic sessions that take place in a small, peer group environment to promote healthy and meaningful interpersonal connections and a sense of community.
  • Family Therapy — When families have lost the ability to communicate, or perhaps never had it in the first place, family therapy sessions can help open the conversation between the individual and family members in a safe environment for all parties.

Mental Health Disorders in Addiction Treatment

According to the National Institutes of Health, research has shown that about half of those who experience a mental health condition during their lives will also experience a substance use disorder and vice versa (2). As such, our programs are designed to address co-occurring mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, also known as dual-diagnosis treatment.

Common Co-Occurring Disorders We Treat Include:

  • Major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and other forms of depression
  • Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and other forms of anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Schizophrenia
